Self-Directed Investors historically have had limited access to private companies like Ayar Labs before they go public. All US investors can download the SoFi or Titan app and, with as little as $500, invest in a portfolio of private and public companies through the ARK Venture Fund.
Ayar Labs is a semiconductor company focused on developing advanced optical interconnect technology for AI and high-performance computing in data centers. The company aims to address the growing demand for faster and more efficient data transfer in computing environments by leveraging its proprietary silicon photonics technology, which enables high-speed data transmission with lower power consumption compared to traditional electrical interconnects.
As artificial intelligence (AI) servers become increasingly dense, and clusters fill gigawatt-scale facilities, the physics of copper interconnects impose hard limits on bandwidth and reach. This "copper wall" is motivating a platform shift in data center architecture that could favor companies pioneering optical alternatives. Ayar Labs, in ARK's view, stands at the center of this inflection.
Ayar Labs is the first silicon photonics company to reach market with an optical I/O processor.1 The company's TeraPHY chiplet and SuperNova light source deliver roughly ten times lower latency, five to ten times more bandwidth, and four to eight times less power consumption than traditional copper interconnects. These are not incremental improvements; they represent the kind of step-function gains that ARK associates with disruptive innovation. Our research suggests that if optical input/output (I/O) achieves broad adoption, it could drive meaningful cost declines and productivity gains across high-performance computing (HPC) and AI infrastructure.
The technical complexity of co-packaged optics (CPO) creates formidable barriers to entry. Ayar holds 231 granted and pending patents, yet management deliberately avoids an offensive intellectual property posture to preserve ecosystem relationships—a strategic choice that reflects confidence in its lead. ARK's diligence indicates that Ayar is designed into a Tier 1 chipmaker's roadmap, with production scaling expected around 2027. The company has secured manufacturing capacity and maintains deep partnerships with foundries including GlobalFoundries (GF), which has hosted Ayar's silicon photonics process since 2017, and more recently Alchip and Global Unichip Corporation (GUC) for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) integration paths.
Evidence of execution is accumulating. At the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC) and Hot Chips 2025, Ayar unveiled a third-generation optical chiplet delivering 8 Terabits per second (Tbps), compliant with Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express (UCIe) standards.2 The chiplet is manufactured on GF's established 45-nanometer silicon photonics platform, a mature process that ARK views as a pragmatic foundation for volume production.3 The technology traces its origins to Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) programs, and a $15 million Department of Defense (DoD) contract awarded in 2022 validated Ayar's approach for defense-grade applications.4 In March 2026, the company closed a $500 million Series E round led by Neuberger Berman, with participation from ARK Invest, Insight Partners, and Qatar Investment Authority, bringing total funding to $870 million at a $3.75 billion valuation.5 These milestones suggest a maturing company attracting capital from investors with long time horizons.
The strategic investor roster reinforces ARK's conviction. AMD Ventures, Intel Capital, and NVIDIA have all invested in Ayar—an unusual alignment among competitors, signaling that each views Ayar's solution as best-in-class instead of a threat to internalize. In 2026, Ayar joined NVIDIA's NVLink Fusion ecosystem, positioning its optical I/O alongside NVIDIA's own silicon photonics networking switches, which the graphics processing unit (GPU) maker claims deliver 3.5 times energy savings and ten times resilience versus traditional networking, providing further ecosystem validation.6
The asymmetric upside lies in platform dynamics. If CPO becomes the standard interconnect for next-generation AI accelerators, Ayar's early positioning could translate into exponential adoption as hyperscalers7 and chipmakers race to deploy optical fabrics. The convergence of AI scaling laws, power constraints, and bandwidth demands may compress adoption timelines in ways that linear projections underestimate. ARK's research on technological convergence suggests that when multiple enabling technologies mature simultaneously—in this case, advanced packaging, silicon photonics, and chiplet architectures—the resulting platform shift could exceed market expectations.
ARK's investment in Ayar Labs through the ARK Venture Fund reflects our broader thesis that deflationary forces in compute infrastructure—driven by optical interconnects, advanced packaging, and open ecosystems—will reshape the economics of AI. We believe the opportunity extends well beyond any single company; it represents a structural transformation in how data moves within and between systems. For investors with long-term horizons, the copper wall may prove less a barrier than a catalyst for the next wave of innovation.
